Rules of Thumb

Rules of Thumb - If your main parachute malfunctions and you're trying to decide whether to use your emergency chute, spit. If your spit goes up, use your emergency chute. If your spit goes down, your rate of descent is survivable.

Every Rule Of Thumb On Earth In Once Place!

Try this: Count the number of times a cricket chirps in 15 seconds, and add 37. No, you didn't just calculate your age in cricket years - you measured the temperature outdoors in degrees Fahrenheit. You just used a rule of thumb.

A rule of thumb is a homemade recipe for making a guess. It is an easy-to-remember guide that falls somewhere between a mathematical formula and a shot in the dark. A farmer, for instance, knows to plant his corn when oak leaves are the size of squirrels' ears. An economics professor knows from sad experience that inviting more than 25 percent of the guests for a university dinner party from the economics department ruins the conversation. Rules of thumb are a kind of tool. They help you appraise a problem or situation. They make it easier to consider the subtleties of the topic at hand; they give you a feel for a subject.

CHOOSING A WOODSTOVE
If you are trying to decide what size woodstove you need, you can start by figuring 2.5 cubic feet of firebox per 1,000 square feet of living space.

MINIMIZING HOLD TIME
Don’t like to be on phone hold? If that first option is to hablo Espanol, regardless of your preference, select it. The folks who speak Spanish also speak English so you get through faster since there are fewer requests for Espanol.

THE WEEKEND SAILOR'S RULE
The distance traveled in 3 minutes, measured in yards, divided by 100, equals your speed in knots. Conversely, your speed in knots, times 100, is how many yards you will travel in 3 minutes. Here's an example: 15 knots equals 1,500 yards every 3 minutes.
